Cantor Linda Shivers

Cantor Linda Shivers has served as cantor of Congregation Neveh Shalom since 1986. She has previously served congregations in Charleston, South Carolina, and Hampton, Virginia.

Cantor Shivers earned her Bachelor´s of Sacred Music and Diploma of Hazzan from the Cantor´s Institute of the Jewish Theological Seminary. She also has a BA from the University of Texas.

Cantor Shivers is a member of both the Cantors Assembly (Conservative) and the American Conference of Cantors (Reform). She was a founding member of the Women´s Cantor Network. She is also very active in a group of interfaith women clergy that have been meeting monthly since 1990. She has also participated in the Cantorial program of the Institute for Jewish Spirituality which has had a tremendous influence on her.

While at Neveh Shalom she has been responsible for teaching the B´nai Mitzvah students, the 13 Mitzvot program, the adult and junior choirs and the Cultural Arts Programs. She currently sits on the Ritual Committee. Her goal is to "do everything possible to promote Jewish prayer, Jewish music and Jewish musicians to the people of Portland; young and old, Jewish and non-Jewish".

Cantor has two children, Sheerya and Zachary. She was born in Farell, Pennsylvania, and grew up in Pompano Beach, Florida.
