Neveh Shalom Adult Choir Mondays 7:30pm-9pm
The Neveh Shalom Adult Choir continues a very long tradition of choral music at our synagogue. The choir meets from 7:30-9pm most Monday nights from mid-August to May. The choir will be accepting new members starting Monday, October 8. Call (503- 246-8831 ext. 116) or email (cantor@nevehshalom. org) Cantor Shivers for more information about joining. No Hebrew knowledge is required. All music is transliterated into English.
This season the choir will be performing Sephardic music at Friday night services on December 14. They will also sing a Saturday evening concert of different kinds of Sephardic music with Cantor Ramon Tasat on February 2, 2008. The Friday night before on Feb. 1, 6:15pm, the choir will lead the congregation in Sephardic melodies. Following the service will be a Friday night dinner that is open to all - come and have a chance to eat with our guest cantor. Chai, Plus a Few
Formerly 50+ Group from MJCC, our goal is to create a fun and safe
venue for mature Jewish singles to meet and socialize. Call Julian

information.
Havurah Program
The Havurah Program at Neveh Shalom provides
every member the opportunity to meet, to celebrate and to socialize
with small groups of 5-8 individuals and/or families. The groups meet
in the homes of individual Havurah members on a schedule established by
them. For more info contact JoAnn Bezodis 503.293.7309.
After a Jew dies, a burial society, known as the Chevra Kadisha
(literally, "holy society") prepares the body for interment. This
process, called tahara (purification), involves the respectful, ritual
cleaning of the corpse, by men for males and by women for females.
The Neveh Shalom Chevra Kvod Hamet, a voluntary, community-wide
organization, devoted to the reverential preparation of the dead
according to Jewish tradition, was established 30 years ago under the
guidance of Rabbi Stampfer.
The Neveh Shalom Chevra Kvod Hamet is a group of committed Jews who
prepare the body for burial. Currently, the membership includes men and
women from nine Portland Synagogues.
The Chevra Kvod Hamet provides services to any Jew, whether
affiliated with a synagogue or not. The Chevra Kvod Hamet is
financially self-supporting.
Jewish tradition regards it as exceptionally meritorious to join a
Chevra Kadisha, as performing this important mitzvah is done
anonymously.
A Havurah (Hebrew for "fellowship") is a group of individuals, couples and/or families with children who meet regularly to study, socialize, and celebrate Jewish life in a unique manner determined by each particular Havurah. It is a way for congregants to develop "communities within community" bringing together groups under the Neveh Shalom umbrella with similar demographics, values and interests and giving our large congregation a more intimate feel.
For more information about the Havurot program, please contact Caron Blau Rothstein at crothstein@nevehshalom.org or download the Havurah Interest Form.
Calling all teens who love to sing! HaZamir is a national Jewish teen choir for teens in 9th through 12th grade. There will also be an opportunity to join in a HaZamir Israel trip and sing your way across Israel during the summer of 2008 in time to celebrate Israel's 60th birthday. Becky Thompson will be the conductor. Watch for a notice of an informational meeting soon!

May 16 Several times throughout the year we have Shabbat Rocks the Rose
City. These services feature ThePercy Bernstein Orchestra. The
orchestra is made up of adults and high school student players of many
instruments and they are often joined by a
guest musician. Each player has to have played their instrument for 3 years before being eligible to join.
The Shabbat services that they perform at are called Shabbat Rocks the

Percy Bernstein, a clarinetist who was instrumental in getting the orchestra

Shoreshim
Is there a group at Congregation Neveh Shalom that plans events and holds services designed
for families with young children? Yes!
The Shoreshim Committee at Congregation Neveh Shalom is dedicated to creating educational and fun events for young families and includes...
Tot Shabbat is a fun Saturday morning servicefor parents and children. Tot Shabbat meets the 1st and 3rd Saturdays of each month at 10:15 a.m. in the Zidell Chapel. This 45-minuteservice includes prayers, music, songs, story time and is followed by a Kiddush lunch.
Shabbat Kids, also held the 1st and 3rd Saturdays of the month and beginning at 10:15, meets in Rooms 113-115. It is for children ages kindergarten through second grade. Shabbat Kids is a participatory Shabbat service appropriate for school-age children. Afterward, the older kids join the younger set in the chapel for Kiddush lunch.
Tiny Treasures Workshops.
Throughout the year, the Shoreshim Committee plans several fun workshop events with themes (from the Shema to Yom Ha’atzmaut) that introduce children to our
Jewish traditions and holidays. Lasting about90 minutes, these workshops educate the children with interactive crafts, songs, food and fun!
Shabbat and Havdallah Dinners. Also throughout the year, the Shoreshim Committee puts on Shabbat and Havdallah dinners as a way to introduce children to sharing the joy of end-of-week rituals with family and friends. Often two hours in length, these evening meals are a chance to come together, participate in fun observance, play and -- of
course -- eat well, family style!”
